Why no white cast is a filter question
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are solid particles that stay on the surface and scatter visible light along with ultraviolet. That scattered visible light is the grey you see on medium and deep skin. Chemical filters dissolve into the formula instead, so nothing remains on top to scatter.
