Drunk Elephant Sunscreen in India: The Umbra Range
Drunk Elephant makes two sunscreens, both called Umbra: a Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 and a tinted Umbra Tinte SPF 30, each a mineral (zinc-based) formula. In India they are easy to find on grey-market resellers and hard to find authentic, so buy first-party. Our sun-care range starts at ₹1,499.
The Umbra range, explained
Drunk Elephant keeps it simple with two SPF products under the Umbra name, and both are physical (mineral) sunscreens built around zinc oxide rather than chemical filters.
Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 is the untinted version, blended with antioxidants and meant to double as a light moisturiser. Because it is mineral, it can leave a faint cast on deeper skin tones, which is the trade-off mineral filters carry. Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 is the same idea with a universal tint added to offset that cast and even out tone, so it reads more like a very light base than a sunscreen.
Both sit at SPF 30. That is enough for lower-exposure, mostly indoor days used at a full dose, but for long hours in Indian sun an SPF 50 is the safer default.
| Product | Type | SPF | Best for | Approx price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense | Mineral, untinted | SPF 30 | Fair to medium skin wanting a moisturising mineral SPF | around ₹6,350 |
| Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense | Mineral, tinted | SPF 30 | Those who want a tint to cancel mineral cast and even tone | around ₹6,350 |
How to buy authentic Drunk Elephant in India
Drunk Elephant has no official India storefront, so most search results are either United States retailers that do not ship sunscreen here or resellers importing stock through unofficial channels. With sunscreen that matters more than with most products, because heat and age degrade filters, and a jar that has sat in a hot warehouse for a year will not protect the way a fresh one does.
Buy from a first-party seller that imports and stores stock properly, check the batch code and expiry, and treat an unusually low price as a warning rather than a win. If a listing cannot tell you where the stock came from, that is reason enough to pass.
If you want the same idea for less, or at SPF 50
Umbra is a considered, antioxidant-rich mineral SPF, but it is a sizeable spend at SPF 30. If you like the clean mineral route but want a higher rating, a lightweight fluid such as La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 gives SPF 50+ with a modern UVA filter and no mineral cast. And if you want an India-made option at a fraction of the price, Artisun Origin is a dewy SPF 50+ PA++++ milk that also moisturises, while Artisun Aura is an invisible gel with no white cast on deeper tones.
Artisun shares a founder with Luxe by Kan.
FAQ
Is Drunk Elephant sunscreen available in India?
There is no official Drunk Elephant store in India, so it is sold through importers. Both Umbra Sheer and Umbra Tinte can be bought here, but buy first-party and check batch and expiry, since much of what circulates is grey-market stock.
What is the difference between Umbra Sheer and Umbra Tinte?
Both are mineral SPF 30 sunscreens. Umbra Sheer is untinted and moisturising; Umbra Tinte adds a universal tint to offset mineral cast and even out tone, so it wears more like a light base.
Is Drunk Elephant Umbra good for Indian skin?
It can be, especially the tinted version for deeper tones where a plain mineral SPF may leave a cast. For long hours in strong sun, an SPF 50 gives more margin than Umbra's SPF 30.
Why is Drunk Elephant sunscreen so expensive in India?
It is imported with no local manufacturing, so shipping, duties and reseller margins stack onto a price that is already premium abroad. Comparable protection is available at lower prices from India-made options.
Is Umbra a chemical or mineral sunscreen?
Both Umbra formulas are mineral (physical) sunscreens built on zinc oxide. If you prefer a chemical-filter finish with no cast, a fluid such as La Roche-Posay UVMune 400 or Artisun Origin is the alternative.
